rs548049170_1_69869_TT (The Other Shapes of Me) – Emilio Vavarella

rs548049170_1_69869_TT (The Other Shapes of Me) is a large installation based on the conversion of the genetic code into fabric by the artist Emilio Vavarella. The title of the work refers to the first line of text resulting from the genotyping of the artist’s DNA.

This project advances Vavarella’s research on the origins of binary technology and its most recent applications: from weaving to programming, algorithms, software, automation processes, up to the complete digitalization of a human being.

The result is a monumental work composed of three elements: the fabric, the loom and the video in which Marinella, the artist’s mother, retraces the entire production chain up to the realization of the fabric itself, through one of the first modern computational machines: the 19th century Jacquard loom.
