Joana BC

Joana BC was born in Porto. She currently lives and works in a quiet small village near Serra da Estrela, the highest mountain range in Portugal. Her multidisciplinary artistic practice incorporates drawing, painting, sculpture, performance and installation.

She studied Painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Porto, institution where she was a teacher from 2012 to 2021, and took a master’s degree in Painting at the Slade School of Fine Art, London. Her work has been exhibited in Portugal, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Switzerland, Canada and Turkey.

In 2021 she had a solo exhibition entitled Things I think about but don’t say (as a matter of education) at CAAA – Center for Art and Architecture Affairs in Guimarães, Portugal and was an artist-in-residence at Viarco | Portuguese Pencil Factory in São João da Madeira, Portugal. Also in 2021, the artist book Parsimin’s Life (according to the palm reader) was released, edited by Stolen Books and CAAA. In 2019, invited by Contextile, she participated as an artist-in-residence at the Biennale internationale du lin de Portneuf, Québec, Canada. In 2015 she received the Künstlerhaus Schloss Balmoral Scholarship for an artist residency in Bad Ems, Germany.
