Through the construction of participatory platforms, often taking the form of ephemeral journeys, I draw out group dynamics and test social structures. In addition to the primary experience of the participants, I create photographs and videos which serve as both documents and autonomous works.
My participatory platforms are events comprised of a loose set of circumstances in which individuals interact with one another through a shared activity. Each platform becomes its own structure, both visually and socially. I typically work with strangers — often contacted on the internet — most of whom are not artists.
These whimsical journeys function as a catalyst for interaction. These experiences often start out as awkward exchanges which frequently lead to intimate moments. I am interested in how one can have a personal discovery through group conversation.
Through each designated site combined with the groups’ activity, unscripted behaviors emerge, creating an ambiguity between scripted and unscripted behavior. The romantic landscape creates a heightened experience in which individuals lose themselves to experience. What I call primal social behaviors emerge under these circumstances, making the presence of cultural etiquette palpable.
The work exists in two ways — participatory events and photographs/videos of the event. In this sense the camera works as a participant, a filter capturing viewpoints at set stages of time. In the photographs and videos the emerging social body becomes a plastic material. These autonomous documents serve as a repository of possibilities and a call to a wider audience for future journeys yet to be undertaken.
Through participatory platforms I orchestrate spaces of temporary autonomy that elude formal social structures. In the resulting open ended, non-hierarchical system of social relations, the quotidien gives way to a direct, heightened engagement with the present moment.
