Mónica Carriço is an architect-urbanist, researcher, and – together with Bert de Muynck – director of MovingCities. She holds a master’s degree in Architecture Urban & Territorial Planning from Lisbon’s Technical University [FAUTL PT] and is a member of the Portuguese Architects’ Guild [OA – Ordem dos Arquitectos #13222]. From 2002 until 2006, Mónica practiced architecture in Amsterdam [NL] with One Architecture and SeARCH architects. In 2006 she moved to Beijing [CN] to collaborate with People’s Architecture, a non-profit New York-based cultural organization. Currently, based in Shanghai since 2009, Monica develops architectural and urban research, cross-cultural project management, visual communication design, cultural productions and creative consultancy within movingcities.org. Bert de Muynck is an architect, writer and co-director of MovingCities. Since September 2011, Bert de Muynck holds the position of ‘assistant professor’ at the The University of Hong Kong – Faculty of Architecture, and that in the HKU Shanghai Study Center. In the past decade Bert de Muynck lived and worked in Amsterdam [2001-2006], Beijing [2006-2009] and Shanghai [2009-…]. Movingcities is an independent research organization investigating the role that architecture and urbanism play in shaping the contemporary city. Bert de Muynck’s writing ranges from fact till fiction. So far he has published in 15+ different countries and 30+ different magazines [VOLUME (NL), MARK magazine (NL), DOMUS (IT), Urban China (CN), DOMUSchina (CN), Commercial Real Estate in China (CN), GAM (AU), MONU (AU/NL), CITY (UK), Stadtbauwelt (DE), LOG (US), SARAI Reader (IN), Tresholds (US), Perspective Magazine (HK), DWB (BE), BEYOND (NL), SPACE(ROK)…] During the past years MovingCities has conducted research, lectures and workshops in China, Israel, Sweden, Netherlands, Finland and Indonesia. Bert de Muynck holds and MA Architectural Engineering [Catholic University Leuven, BE] and a GAS Cultural Sciences [Free University Brussels, BE]. He lectured at the XXII World Congress of Architecture, UIA (Istanbul, 2005), the FUIUF conference at Fudan University (Shanghai, 2006). Between 2005-07 he was invited as a critical respondent to the ‘Capital Cities’-research at the Berlage Institute (Rotterdam). From May-July 2007 he was, along with Ned Rossiter and Mónica Carriço, coordinator of the “Transdisciplinary Research on Creative Industries in Beijing – Mobile Research Laboratory“. In December 2010, Bert de Muynck was invited by the UNESCO Creative Cities to moderate a discussion during the 2010 Shenzhen International UNESCO Creative Cities Network conference. MovingCities has set-up programs for the Netherlands Architecture Institute [NAi, China MatchMaking Program, 2009-2011], Dutch Design Fashion and Architecture [DutchDFA, China Mapping Report Design and Fashion, 2011] and Finnish Association of Architects [SAFA, Snowball Architecture Seminar, 2010] in China.
